1998: a sunset, a sketch and Tuned Air

The Air Max Plus was designed by Sean McDowell, and its origin story is now sneaker folklore. The gradient upper was inspired by a Florida sunset, and the distinctive spiky cage that wraps the mesh echoes the silhouette of palm trees against that sky. It is rare for a design story to be so literally legible in the finished product, but with the TN you can genuinely see it.

Underneath, the shoe introduced Nike's Tuned Air system, a cushioning setup designed to provide both support and stability. The name stuck in the most enduring way possible: Tuned Air became TN, and TN became what everyone actually calls the shoe.

The whale tail and the details that defined it

Look at the heel and you will find the sculpted TPU piece that fans call the whale tail. Combined with the caged upper and the visible Air units, it gave the Plus a look that could not be mistaken for anything else on the shelf. In an era when running shoes were becoming increasingly clean, the TN went the other way entirely.

How the TN became a UK street icon

The Air Max Plus was adopted early and hard by European and UK street culture. In the UK especially it developed a following that had nothing to do with running and everything to do with attitude, becoming a fixture in music, on estates and in city centres for decades.
